Kobo High Stool by Keiji Ashizawa

The KOBO HIGH STOOL stands out with its distinctive combination of materials and simple structure, featuring one wooden leg and two steel legs. This versatile design allows it to serve not only as a stool but also as a stylish small display stand.

Keiji Ashizawa, based in Tokyo, Japan, is a talented designer and architect. Graduating from Yokohama University School of Architecture in 1995, he embarked on a unique career path, combining his skills as an architect with his experience as a steel fabricator during the initial ten years of his professional journey. This background granted him a valuable understanding of metals, which continues to profoundly influence his design approach.

Ashizawa is known for his commitment to 'honest' design, characterized by simplicity, refinement, thoughtfulness, and a light touch. His creative process revolves around maximizing the potential of each material and its function, resulting in naturally derived and exceptional designs. His portfolio spans various scales, from furniture and lighting design to architecture and exhibition projects, showcasing his prowess in applying these principles across different contexts.

Since 2001, his furniture and lighting designs have gained international recognition through exhibitions and showcases around the world. In recognition of his significant involvement in the establishment of Ishinomaki Laboratory—a DIY furniture workshop that emerged in Ishinomaki city, Japan, following the devastating tsunami triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake—Ashizawa was honored with a 'Special Award' by the Japan Institute of Design in 2011.
