Established in 2004 by Koichi Suzuno and Shinya Kamuro, TORAFU ARCHITECTS adopts an architectural thinking approach to their diverse and innovative projects. The ISHINOMAKI STOOL emerged from a series of furniture-making workshops conducted in collaboration with the renowned US furniture company, Herman Miller, and targeted towards locals and primary school students. In response to the needs of those residing in temporary housing in the Ishinomaki area, members of Ishinomaki Laboratory identified a demand for both a step stool to access high-up storage and a chair for putting on shoes near the house entrance.

Remarkably, they observed that residents ingeniously repurposed plastic cases meant for storing beer bottles to fulfill various functional needs. Inspired by this spirit of resourcefulness and innovation, the concept of the Ishinomaki Stool took shape. Designed to be compact, lightweight, and versatile, this stool embodies the community's resilient and inventive spirit while addressing their specific requirements.

Keiji Ashizawa, a Tokyo-based architect and designer, brings a unique blend of experiences to his creative endeavors. The invaluable knowledge gained during this formative period, especially his deep understanding of metals, continues to be a driving force in his design philosophy.
